About

Founded by Joe Victor in 2004, Black Range Recording began as a modest home studio and has grown into a fully equipped, multi-room destination studio set in the remote and scenic Mimbres Valley of southern New Mexico. Rebuilt from the ground up beginning in 2019, the current space was handcrafted over several years with a focus on acoustic integrity, creative flow, and a relaxed atmosphere. Outfitted with a hybrid blend of analog and digital gear, vintage instruments, and carefully tuned rooms, the studio is designed to inspire—from tracking to final mix.

The Team

Joe Victor – Owner/Engineer

Joe Victor is the founder and lead engineer at Black Range Recording, a destination-style studio tucked into the remote beauty of New Mexico’s Mimbres Valley. With a lifelong background in music and sound, he combines the instincts of a seasoned musician with the precision of an experienced audio engineer to create recordings that are both polished and deeply human.

Joe, a multi-instrumentalist, cut his teeth as the lead guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for several rock bands, including The Sky and Mojave Green. That time on stage and in studios shapes his intuitive, artist-focused approach to recording.

His production style favors character, dynamics, and emotional honesty — the kind of sound that prioritizes feel over perfection and storytelling over slickness. He works best with artists who want their recordings to breathe with soul and intention.

In addition to his studio work, Joseph is the founder of Goodly Woods, a custom woodworking shop. His years as a luthier at Santa Cruz Guitar Company inform his ear for tone and his meticulous attention to detail — whether shaping a mix or carving a piece of hardwood.

You can also find Joe running live sound at Whisky Creek Zocalo, a staple of the music scene in Silver City, NM.
